“Bawlf, in the heart of the prairies, a quiet central Alberta town…”
In 2016, Community groups and members from the Elks and Lions club, Library staff, Seniors, Village Council representations, School staff and students along with local residents came together around the Community Cancer Prevention Project, Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund (AHS).
The group completed a community assessment and then developed an asset map highlighting popular services and resources available in Bawlf. The group then identified 2 priorities to focus on: UVR awareness and increasing physical activity through play. The group aimed to create spaces where everyone can enjoy physical activity for free.
Funding was provided by many local community groups as well as the AHS grant of $25,000.
The following video was developed by local high school students to be used as a way to highlight the work being done through community member stories and perspectives. Using the video, the community applied for several other grants and have successfully raised over $250,000.

Subsequent projects have included a new playground at the school, shade structures and trees at both the school and the local park, and an outdoor exercise facility at the local park.
