Reducing the Impact of Financial Strain

Income is one of the most important factors that can influence health. Financial strain can be described as economic pressure that may cause stress and subsequently harm health. Anyone can experience difficulty making ends meet at any time in their life.

Reducing the Impact of Financial Strain (RIFS): A Population and Public Health Partnership with Primary Care to Reduce the Risk of Cancer and Chronic Disease project is a groundbreaking collaboration that supports primary care screening for, and responds to, financial concerns of patients. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen linkages to locally available services and build community capacity to address gaps in services.

In April 2018, Alberta Health Services received funding, to co-design and implement RIFS with communities and primary care networks (PCNs).

RIFS is currently being piloted with three PCN-Zone-Community sites in Alberta:

  • McLeod River Primary Care Network – AHS North Zone – Whitecourt
  • Albert Sturgeon Primary Care Network – AHS Edmonton Zone – Morinville
  • Kalyna Country Primary Care Network – AHS Central Zone – Vermilion and Viking

Multi-sectoral teams are working together to understand what is important to community members in reducing the impact of financial strain on their health. Teams are creating action plans to address the unique needs of their communities. Working alongside researchers and evaluators, community teams are accessing strategies and tools to support this work.

RIFS aims to strengthen connections between community members and organizations, including primary care teams. Together, partners collaboratively design local solutions to support health by addressing financial concerns in a sensitive, compassionate and sustainable way. While the community looks at improving identified supports, Primary Care teams identify and support patients with financial concerns and help them access appropriate community supports.
