Communities in Action: Wetaskiwin

Connect Wetaskiwin is a resident-led volunteer group that is incorporating Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) to help discover the gifts, skills, passions and assets of Wetaskiwin. For the past year the team has been learning how to be leaders in ABCD from the Tamarack Institute.

Since 2022, Connect Wetaskiwin has hosted several community-led conversations focusing on the community's gifts and skills. They developed an in-depth engagement and communication plan on how to broaden their reach in the city, as well as recently developing an ABCD focused survey for people who live, work and play in Wetaskiwin. The team has visited many community groups, agencies and local residents about the survey and to spread the word about making positive changes in Wetaskiwin. The survey data will be complied and shared, with the goal to highlight common and complimentary interests, gifts and skills.

The foundation of the committee is “by us – for us”, creating sustainability through building capacity of local residents to lead such a project. The group has been successful in two grants that will help support the initiative and their continued learning through Tamarack. The team aim to build upon community outreach during the summer months by adding more neighborhood connection initiatives such as block parties, but with the added bonus of intentionally learning more about the wealth of skills and gifts in Wetaskiwin.
