Celebrate Success: Stettler, Alberta

The Alberta Healthy Communities Initiative (AHCI) involved 19 rural communities partnering with Alberta Health Services (AHS), Cancer Prevention and Screening Innovation (CPSI) to learn and engage in the Alberta Healthy Communities Approach. The initiative was based on the principle that, when working together, communities can determine their own solutions to create supportive environments that foster healthy choices. 

In 2019 the opportunity to take part in the Alberta Healthy Communities Initiative came knocking on Stettler’s door and a core group was established to guide the work. The Stettler Wellness Network came together to create space for solution focused collaboration. The network was comprised of volunteers, the Recreation Director, representatives from the Youth Centre, Family Resource Network, AHS Nutrition Services and Addictions and Mental health as well as local schools. Team members shared the vision of a healthy and thriving community. 

Engaging in the Alberta Health Communities Approach the team spent time learning about local assets and soon prioritized community connections and sense of belonging as focus areas. Although the pandemic shifted meetings online the team continued to gain a better understanding of the community by creating a survey that asked how people connect to one another. The results were shared at well attended engagement session. 

The team then worked on enhancing an online directory to raise awareness on what resources were available in Stettler. Collaboration was evident when a community trailer was purchased and filled with outdoor games, activities, a barbeque, tables and chairs, pop-up tents for shade and tips on how to host a block party. The trailer can be rented out by residents for events held throughout the year.

The Stettler Wellness Network created a logo along with key messages that highlight the value of a healthy community. The graphics are consistently used on all marketing material and communications to increase awareness of the network around town.

The Stettler Wellness Network has demonstrated commitment and resilience throughout the last four years. The dedication of team members, their shared vision and strong community leadership have set the stage for continued collaboration. Thank you Stettler!
