Community Stories:

Coronation - Walking Trails

Working collaboratively on community projects that aim to increase physical activity is an opportunity to strengthen community partnerships.

The Plan

Coronation a town in east-cental Alberta has a diverse team made up of representatives from the Town of Coronation, County of Paintearth, Family and Community Support Services, AHS and volunteers who focus on health and wellness initiatives. One identified priority was to build upon existing structures to enhance walking trails while at the same time, showcasing various assets in their community.

Coronation has a popular 1 km trail that has stationary exercise equipment along the way. The goal for this project was to expand upon the trail by enhancing sidewalks and pathways then adding wayfinding signage to direct foot traffic.

The committee started by identifying 4 trails to map out and mark. A sign board was purchased to hold a 3’x 5’ map of the town, highlighting the trails. Mini trail signs (8x10”) were made and printed off for community use. All trails were identified by name and location. Benches were also purchased and strategically placed as rest zones. Bike racks were also installed in the downtown core for safe storage and to encourage active travel. The trails are multi-use and used often.

The Outcomes

The project was successful due to the commitment from the various stakeholders. The Town of Coronation was able to provide funds for benches and the installation of signage. Members of the committee all worked to find pricing and cost for installation. Volunteer hours were also calculated along the way to ensure acknowledgement of the work put in and to celebrate efforts.
