Community Stories:
Evansburg – Community Garden Project
October 01, 2018
The Plan
The 2016 Thrive Wellness Committee worked collaboratively to build a community garden in Evansburg. Members of the committee shared an interest to improve healthy food options while working together to create a local gathering space for community members to enjoy the outdoors.
The County, Lobstick Literacy Society, gardening clubs, the library, businesses, school council and other volunteers are contributing their time and expertise in planning the gardens. All aspects of a sustainable garden program were considered, including; cost, water access, tool sheds, compost and ongoing maintenance. The Thrive Community Garden updates continue to be posted on the Thrive Wellness Committee Facebook page.
Everyone has something to contribute! 9 community garden beds were constructed by local high school students. Planters were placed in an empty lot between the Lutheran Church and a Seniors residence. Volunteers are encouraged to reserve a plot each spring to grow and maintain throughout the summer.
The Outcomes
Planters are rented at a very low cost to volunteers who wish to plant and maintain their own outdoor growing space. The committee has agreed to reserve one plot and jointly take care of it throughout the season. The harvest will be donated to Wee Food Bank hampers for families in the community.
The gardens continued to bloom throughout the pandemic.
