Mocktail challenges and events to promote alcohol free options in the community.
The Plan
The Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (LCFASD) is a not-for-profit organization with offices throughout northeast Alberta that provides information about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and offers prevention, diagnostic and support services in the Lakeland area. The centre also provides services to persons affected by FASD, including children diagnosed with FASD, their families, schools, employers and community agencies.
A decade ago the centre developed a creative way to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder by hosting a “mocktail” event in the community. Mocktails are great tasting non-alcoholic drinks. Successful mocktail events are available to company and community parties throughout the Lakeland area for a small donation based on the size of the business or organization.
The Outcomes
Mocktail events not only raise awareness about FASD, but promote options other than consuming alcohol that support healthy habits and safer nights out. Fun “Mocktail Challenges” are also held in the community where local businesses and agencies compete to create delicious alcohol free drinks.
LCFASD also offers an employment program and participants work at mocktail events to gain valuable experience. It also provides an opportunity for those affected by FASD to learn, practice and socialize.
