Community Stories:
Strathmore - HEAL our Future
June 25, 2019
HEAL Our Future is a grassroots initiative which aims to create a community environment that supports healthy eating and active living in Strathmore. The team meets once a month and their goal is to enhance positive changes within the social and physical environments. Their main focus has been on walking as this is an affordable, accessible option for many people.
Individuals and organizations that were interesting in the healthy future of Strathmore residents worked together to map community assets and identify needs. A shared vision began to emerge and an action plan was developed. Over time, a logo and promotional material were created to establish an identity recognized in the community.
The Plan
HEAL has invested time in many community activities that promote active living including;
- Winter Walk Days
- Great Skates – Family Day event
- Sports Equipment Swap
- Advocacy for walking trail at town council
HEAL collaborates with many organizations to support successful community events and initiatives. One example of an ongoing partnership is with the Calgary Rural Primary Health Care Network. Together they started a pedometer loaner program and an indoor walking schedule to engage the community to get more active. HEAL has also organized a number of walking challenges alongside larger events such as the Olympics and Grey Cup. They even presented at the Alberta Walkability Roadshow by sharing recommendations they identified through an annual report.
The Outcomes
HEAL is proud to be a Spirit of Community Leadership Award nominee. They have been highlighted in APPLE magazine and various other community news articles.
