Knowing the landscape of cancer in Indigenous populations provides a foundation for personalized planning, development, and evaluation.
Indigenous communities are home to Elders and Knowledge Holders, whose teachings include traditional ways of knowing and support building parallel perspectives of knowledge.
What do we need to be healthy?
The Indigenous Alberta Healthy Communities Approach was created in collaboration with Indigenous communities. We are also proud to have worked in collaboration with the Alberta First Nations Information Governance Centre, through our First Nation and Cancer Prevention Screening project.
Together, we are dedicated to building collaborative cancer prevention actions, and creating supportive opportunities for members of our communities to make healthy choices.
The approach has four main themes based on community needs assessments related to First Nations, Métis and Inuit cancer journeys.

The four themes are:
- Understanding and acknowledgement of Indigenous self-governance and self-determination
- Access to land and resources
- The importance of having strong health kinship and partnerships
- The importance of having the right infrastructure and resources in place.
